How To Watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie At Home

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is not a film many people asked for specifically, but it is one that delivers exactly what you would want out of an Illumination animated adventure based on the iconic video game. This is a fun, fast-paced animated movie with tons of jokes, a bright and colorful world, recognizable characters, and lots and lots of popular songs.

It is also a movie that's resonated deeply with audiences of all ages. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was not only a hit, it was a massive victory for Nintendo and Illumination. Everyone's favorite plumber crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office in only 26 days and has grossed $1.2 billion at the time of writing. This is partly because PG-rated movies have been slowly disappearing from theaters in recent years, forcing families to wait longer than usual for new releases their kids can obsess over -- and "Super Mario Bros." is just what they needed.

Besides, this movie also gave us the first true contender for Best Original Song at next year's Academy Awards with the certified banger "Peaches." The song, performed by Jack Black's Bowser, King of the Koopas, is a love song to his true love, Princess Peach, and also outright hilarious.

Now, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is coming home. Universal Pictures has announced that the film will be available to own or rent on digital platforms starting tomorrow, May 16, 2023, so let's-a go!

Mamma Mia!

There's no information about price yet, but given that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is still playing in theaters, it is likely it will only be available at the premium VOD level for the time being. That means $19.99 for a 48-hour rental or $24.99 to purchase digitally, as is the case for most big studio movies nowadays.

Though releasing such a successful film on digital platforms while it's still playing in theaters might seem like a bad idea, this has worked well for Universal Pictures in the past. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" stayed in the top 10 on the box office charts for 13 weeks straight even after the film hit both VOD and streaming. It's clear families are hungry for movies that young kids can watch, as the market is dominated by PG-13 films. Lately, though, it seems getting to watch those movies at home has only served to further bolster ticket sales.

Meanwhile, there's no word on streaming or a DVD/Blu-ray release just yet, although it's likely "The Super Mario Bros." movie will reach Peacock in about a month from now (similar to "The Last Wish"). In the meantime, here's the film official synopsis:

The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the "let's-a go" attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere.
