How To Watch Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves At Home

There's nothing quite like gathering with your friends for a rowdy session of "Dungeons & Dragons" or any fantasy tabletop role-playing game. But if that's not an option, playing together virtually from home will do in a pinch.

Despite having dominated the tabletop RPG market ever since its arrival in 1974, "Dungeons & Dragons" hasn't had the easiest time translating its appeal to the screen. Courtney Solomon's 2000 "D&D" movie is more of a cringe-fest than an amiable cheese-fest, save for a never-hammier Jeremy Irons somehow doing both the most and the least as the film's villain. (That it somehow got two straight-to-video sequels is an achievement even the savviest D&D player would struggle to pull off.) More than two decades later, Paramount finally gave the property another go with "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," hiring John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — the duo behind 2018's glorious action/comedy farce "Game Night" — to call the shots.

The resulting film was an immediate critical success, starting with its reception at South by Southwest (SXSW). In his own review, /Film's Jacob Hall writes that Daley and Goldstein's movie "is powered by humor and heart, a take that is more 'Princess Bride' with big action than grim 'n' gritty dark fantasy." Alas, after a respectable opening weekend, the arrival of those pesky Mario Brothers quickly sent "Honor Among Thieves" toppling down the box office charts. Just over a month into its theatrical run, the $150 million "D&D" reboot is still nowhere near profitability and appears to be just about out of gas, essentially killing any chances of a sequel happening down the line.

On a more positive note: Paramount has confirmed "Honor Among Thieves" will be hitting Digital on May 2, 2023, followed by its home media premiere four weeks later.

Get Ready For A Treasure Horde Of Extras

Collect your best set of dice and bumbling heist crew, it's time for your latest D&D session! Paramount has announced "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" will become available to watch at home on Premium Video-On-Demand and to purchase on Digital starting May 2, 2023. The film's Digital release will also feature more than an hour's worth of additional bonus material, with an inventory that includes a gag reel and deleted/extended scenes. Among the many featurettes included are "From Dice to Dragons: Honoring the Lore" (which dives into the process of adapting the D&D game for the big screen ... again), "Rogues' Gallery: The Heroes of Dungeons & Dragons," "Fantastic Foes" (which examines the film's villains), and much more.

In an era where studios have increasingly skimped on the home media bonus features, it's great to see Paramount going all-out with extras for "Honor Among Thieves." Of course, if you're uninterested in special features, you could always wait a little longer to stream the movie by itself on Paramount+ instead. You should be able to do just that by mid to late May, at which point Paramount will have fulfilled its agreement to show its movies in theaters for 45 days before sending them to its streamer.

Last, not certainly not least, we haven't forgotten about all your hard copy collectors! You can pick up "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" on 4K Ultra HD SteelBook, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting on May 30, 2023. Its official synopsis reads as follows:

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people in this hilarious and action-packed adventure.
