Here's When You Can Watch Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness At Home

After braving the multiverse, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) are headed somewhere totally new: to Disney+. The latest Marvel film, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," is set to hit the streamer in just a few weeks.

Director Sam Raimi's entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will hit Disney+ on June 22, 2022. The news came via Marvel Studios' official Twitter account, which shared the streaming announcement alongside a poster featuring both Strange and the film's antagonist, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). "Marvel Studios' #DoctorStrange in the Multiverse of Madness streams June 22 on @DisneyPlus," according to the post.

It's a pretty no-nonsense home release announcement, but then again, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" hasn't been an outright crowdpleaser for the studio. The film has already gained a reputation as one of Marvel's weirder, less classifiable entries. On the one hand, the film has made over $800 million at the global box office, and viewers have lauded Raimi's horror film sensibilities. On the other, the movie has gained its shares of detractors as well, thanks in large part to some unexpected and less-than-convincing writing choices.

As with all Phase IV Marvel stories, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" picks up post-"Avengers: Endgame," and sees Stephen Strange meet multiverse-hopping teenager America Chavez. After appearing in Strange's dreams, America clues him in to some of the secrets of the multiverse, and the pair end up in an alternate version of Earth, with a bereft Scarlet Witch, influenced by an ancient text called the Darkhold, hot on their heels.

Though Marvel hasn't officially announced a release date for Blu-Ray, 4K, and DVD versions of the film yet, the Disney+ drop will follow the now-typical 45-day window for theatrical releases that several studios have adapted during the pandemic era. However, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" will actually be the first Marvel comic book film of the year to make it to the streamer, as both December's smash hit "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and the much less beloved living vampire saga "Morbius" have other first-pay streaming deals thanks to their Sony distribution.

June is set to be a major month for Disney+, with the streamer already apparently breaking viewership records with the debut of the "Star Wars" series "Obi-Wan Kenobi." The streamer will also debut its latest Marvel TV show, "Ms. Marvel," on June 8, 2022. The latest series will star Iman Vellani as Avengers fangirl and superpowered teen Kamala Khan.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" will hit Disney+ on June 22, 2022.
