The Best Movies And TV Shows Coming To Netflix December 2021

Happy Holidays, reader. Yes, that's right – we're in the endgame now. The year 2021 is winding down, bringing with it colder weather, excessive Christmas music, and, of course, new stuff on Netflix. As the calendar flips over from November to December, Netflix is closing out the year with several high-profile original movies. They also will be offering a slew of holiday-themed material along with library titles. So, in theory, there should be something for everyone! So let's take a look at the new TV shows and movies headed to Netflix in December 2021.

Don't Look Up

I haven't seen "Don't Look Up" yet, so I can't comment on its quality. That said, this film is clearly going to be big for Netflix. How could it not, with a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Chris Evans, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, and more? The wild card here is director Adam McKay, who people seem to be hit or miss on these days. I seem to be one of the few people who liked "Vice," McKay's incredibly unsubtle portrait of Dick Cheney. That said, the trailers for "Don't Look Up" have left me a little cold. But I'm still interested in checking this one out just to see how DiCaprio and Lawrence work together. The two stars play astronomers trying to warn everyone about a world-killing comet that's on the way. Unfortunately, since this is America, where everyone seems to be dangerously stupid lately, people ignore their message of doom.

The Power Of The Dog

One of the best movies of the year (here's my review), "The Power of the Dog" is an incredible slow-burn Western featuring a career-best performance from Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch plays a cruel rancher who boils over with rage when his brother (Jesse Plemons) marries a widow (Kirsten Dunst) with a teenage son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Cumberbatch's character is unrelentingly cruel to his new sister and nephew-in-law, but a curious thing happens when the boy starts to take an interest in Cumberbatch's habits and activities. Director Jane Campion plays things extremely close to the vest, so much so that you won't really know where all of this is going until nearly the final frame. And that makes the movie all the more remarkable.

Minority Report

In recent years, Steven Spielberg's 21st-century output has been reappraised. There was a period where people were saying silly things like, "I wish Spielberg would go back to the movies he used to make!" But the filmmaker's 21st-century oeuvre has resulted in some of his most interesting work. And at the start of the century he kicked things off with two great sci-fi pics. The first was "A.I." The second: "Minority Report," a thrilling mash-up of futuristic sci-fi and hard-boiled noir. Tom Cruise is a cop of the future who works for the Precrime division. Using three clairvoyants as their guide, the Precrime cops arrest people before they've even committed a murder. This raises all sorts of ethical issues, but Cruise's character shrugs them off. That all changes, however, when the clairvoyants, known as Precogs, predict that Cruise is going to commit a murder himself, and soon. Now Cruise has to do what he does best – run! He runs around trying to prove he's innocent and has no plans to murder anyone, but things get very messy very fast.

The Lost Daughter

Maggie Gyllenhaal helms this drama that often feels like a horror movie in disguise. Olivia Colman plays a professor on holiday in Greece. She becomes obsessed with another vacationer, a mother, played by Dakota Johnson. Certain events that transpire during Colman's time away trigger memories of her own complicated past, and unleash a wave of complicated feelings. Gyllenhaal keeps the camera extremely tight on her performers, to the point where "The Lost Daughter" begins to feel crushingly claustrophobic, which only heightens the film's ominous atmosphere.

Pet Sematary

Mary Lambert's 1989 "Pet Sematary," based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, still holds up. The story follows a family that moves to Maine where a cursed burial ground just happens to exist slightly beyond their backyard. Any deceased creature – animal or human – buried in that ground has a tendency to return to life. Unfortunately, anyone or anything that comes back also comes back mean, and hungry for blood. Remember: sometimes, dead is better.
