March is slowly ticking towards its end, which means it will be time for April. Here’s hoping the month will bring with it spring weather and new possibilities. And if it doesn’t bring either of those, it will at least bring new movies to Netflix. So here are the best TV shows and movies coming to Netflix in April 2021.
The Master
Paul Thomas Anderson has yet to make a bad movie (yes, I mean that, don’t @ me), but The Master is one of his best. Based in part on the story of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, The Master follows a miserable, violent drunk (Joaquin Phoenix) who befriends a charismatic cult leader, played by the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Crimson Peak
Guillermo del Toro‘s Crimson Peak was a box office disappointment, primarily because the marketing sold it as a full-blown horror film. Thankfully, over the years, it’s developed a healthy, well-deserved following. Less straightforward horror and more gothic romance, Crimson Peak follows a budding novelist (Mia Wasikowska) who marries a very pale guy (Tom Hiddleston) and heads back to his spooky, haunted mansion. Also on board: Jessica Chastain, who steals the show and chomps the scenery as Hiddleston’s scheming sister.
Synchronic
The latest weird, wild genre oddity from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring) stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as two paramedics in New Orleans who get mixed up in time travel. While Synchronic isn’t my favorite Benson and Moorhead flick, like all their movies, it’s fascinating and inventive and puts most bigger-budgeted Hollywood productions to shame.
Insidious
James Wan‘s super-scary haunted house flick Insidious has a modern family dealing with pesky ghosts who are hell-bent on ruining their lives. Influenced by Poltergeist, this film is deceptively simple in its approach, which works to lower your guard just as a nerve-jangling scare is about to happen.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines
Originally titled Connected, and originally destined for theaters, the animated The Mitchells vs. The Machines is headed to Netflix in April. Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the comedy follows a family road trip that goes awry when a tech uprising leads machines to turn against humanity. So it’s kind of like Maximum Overdrive, but maybe not quite as funny.
